Quick studio note: Our instructors are known for being friendly and welcoming, and we’re proactive about helping with modifications. That same mindset applies after your sessions too.

After Your Five 30 Minute Sessions: A 7-Day Recovery Plan five-session aftercare recovery steps

Right after any of your Five 30 Minute Sessions, prioritize active recovery before you rush back into Chicago life. Give yourself 5 to 10 minutes of easy walking and gentle stretching, rehydrate with water and electrolytes, eat a protein-rich snack within 45 minutes, and use foam rolling later if you feel tight.

This package is built for consistent progress: 5 focused sessions, 30 minutes each, with personalized attention that keeps you moving forward. Your recovery habits are what keep those short sessions adding up in the best way.

Your first 24 to 48 hours after a 30-minute session: do this, skip that

Because these sessions are short, it’s easy to treat them like they “don’t count.” They count. In the first hour, we generally recommend a simple downshift: 5 to 10 minutes of walking, then a few minutes of gentle mobility for the areas you just worked. Keep it easy. You’re telling your nervous system the work is done.

First-hour checklist: water plus electrolytes, a small protein snack within 45 minutes, and light stretching. If you’re heading back to a CTA ride or a short drive, stand up tall and keep your stride relaxed.

Then comes the big “don’t”: avoid heavy lifting or intense cardio for 24 to 48 hours. That means no max-effort lower body day, and no long runs trying to “burn it off.” Mild DOMS (that delayed soreness) is normal and often peaks around 24 to 48 hours, especially if we pushed you but made adjustments so you could complete the exercise. Soreness is fine. Sharp pain is not.

If it’s summer in Chicago and you’ve been outside near North Avenue Beach or walking a ton, take hydration seriously. The heat and humidity sneak up on you. Aim for steady water throughout the day, plus electrolytes if you’re sweating.

Days 2 to 7: how to keep progress without stacking soreness

For most people, the sweet spot between sessions is 48 to 72 hours when possible. That spacing lets you build consistency without feeling like you’re limping through the week. If soreness limits your range of motion, give yourself more time. That’s not “falling off.” That’s smart training.

Keep moving daily, just keep it light: easy walking, gentle stretching, and a few minutes of foam rolling tends to help. If you’re in Lincoln Park or the Southport Corridor and you’ve got DePaul activities, errands, or a busy workday, think in small chunks. Five minutes of mobility in the morning. A short walk at lunch. A couple of stretches before bed.

Winter tip (Chicago edition): cold weather can make you feel stiff before you even start. Warm up a little longer, keep layers on post-session, and save longer static stretches for when you’re actually warm.

And yes, it’s normal to feel “sore in a great way.” We also hear the opposite sometimes: people leave feeling like they got a great workout but aren’t overly tired or wrecked. Both can be true depending on the day’s focus and how your body responds.

Hydration, protein, and sleep: the habits that protect your result

You don’t need fancy supplements to support five-session aftercare. You do need consistency. Start with hydration. If your urine is dark or you’ve got a headache later in the day, you probably waited too long. In summer, add electrolytes. In winter, you still need water even if you’re not drenched in sweat.

Post-workout food (keep it simple)

Within 45 minutes, grab a protein-rich snack and a little carb. Think yogurt and fruit, eggs and toast, a protein shake and a banana, or leftovers you already have. The goal is recovery, not perfection.

Sleep is your secret weapon

If your schedule in Lakeview, Old Town, North Center, Wicker Park, or Bucktown is packed, sleep is often the first thing that gets cut. Try not to. Most muscle repair happens when you’re down for the night. Even one earlier bedtime during your five-session series can make your next workout feel better.

Ice, heat, cardio, and your next booking: quick answers we give all the time

Cardio after your session: Keep it light for 24 to 48 hours. Easy walking is great. Save HIIT, long runs, or hard cycling for after your body settles.

Ice vs heat: For general muscle soreness, gentle heat often feels good. If you have swelling or a new sharp pain, skip heat and reach out. When in doubt, we’d rather you ask than guess.

When to schedule the next 30 minutes: Aim for 48 to 72 hours between sessions when you can. If you’re feeling great and moving well, 48 hours is often fine. If you’re still tight and your range of motion is limited, give it another day.

DOMS timeline: Mild soreness usually shows up the next day and can hang around up to 72 hours. It should gradually improve. If it’s getting worse, that’s a sign to check in.

Sharp pain isn’t “part of it”: when to reach out to our team

We love a challenging session. We don’t love you trying to tough something out that needs attention. Mild DOMS, general tightness, and feeling a bit shaky after a new pattern can be normal.

Reach out right away if you notice: sharp pain, visible swelling, numbness or tingling, or persistent weakness that doesn’t improve within 72 hours. If something feels medically urgent, please reach out to a medical professional.

We’re big on support here. People tell us they feel welcomed fast, and that our instructors pay attention to form and help with modifications so you can keep moving without feeling awkward or behind. That doesn’t end when class ends.

“The class I took was amazing and I felt so sore the next day (in a great way)!”
