Trying 20 Classes Month-to-Month? How to Prepare & What to Expect
By Lincoln Park Pilates & Events | September 15, 2026
One of the most common things we hear from first-timers is, “I was afraid of fitting in, ” and then they’re shocked by how welcoming it feels once they walk through the door. If you’re nervous about starting 20 Classes Month-to-Month, that’s normal.
Here’s the answer up front: yes, the 20-class membership is beginner-friendly, but it’s fast-paced. You’ll do a mix of reformer and mat classes at different intensity levels, you’ll want to book ahead, and it helps to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for orientation and waivers. Bring water and grip socks. And plan for some mild muscle soreness in week one.
How to pace 20 classes in 4 weeks (so your body keeps up)
Twenty classes in a month is doable. It just works best with a plan. The goal is consistency, not crushing yourself on day one and disappearing for a week.
A simple beginner schedule we like: Weeks 1 to 2: 5 classes/week (with at least 1 lighter day). Weeks 3 to 4: 3 to 4 classes/week, plus one true rest day.
In Chicago, routines change fast with summer plans, commuting, and real life. If you live in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Old Town, or anywhere on the North Side, this month-to-month format is a good fit because you can stay consistent without locking into a long contract.
A note on recovery spacing
Pilates can feel sneaky hard. A lot of people leave sweaty, then wake up the next day feeling it in places they didn’t know existed. We generally recommend alternating intensity. If you take a tougher reformer class, follow it with a foundational mat class, a lighter flow, or a rest day.
Before your first reformer class: grip socks, booking, and a Southport Corridor reality check
A few practical things make your first week smoother.
What to bring
- Grip socks (this matters on the reformer)
- Water bottle
- Moisture-wicking layers you can move in
- Optional small towel if you sweat easily
Arrive early (just this once)
Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for orientation and waivers. We’ll get you checked in, show you where everything is, and make sure you feel comfortable before class starts.
Book ahead, especially around rush windows
Popular morning and evening slots can fill, especially when the Southport Corridor is busy. If you want a predictable routine, reserve your classes in advance. If you’re coming in from Lakeview or downtown, we’re easy to reach off the Red, Brown, and Purple lines, so planning ahead keeps it simple.
One more thing that helps us help you: let us know if you’ve never used a reformer, if anything feels sensitive (low back, wrists, knees), and what you want out of the month. Stronger core? Better posture? A routine you’ll actually stick with? We’ll coach you with that in mind.
Your first 20 Classes Month-to-Month visit, step by step (no guesswork)
When you arrive, we’ll get you checked in and handle waivers. Our space is known for being clean and well-kept, and the locker rooms are set up so you can actually get ready without feeling rushed. We also have an infrared sauna, which a lot of members love as an add-on to their routine.
If you’re new, we’ll point you to a beginner-friendly reformer or foundational mat class first. The reformers we use are floor height, which tends to feel more stable if you’re nervous about the equipment. Then, once class starts, your instructor will cue you clearly and keep things moving. A first-time visitor described our teaching as “impeccable cueing, smooth transitions, and zero wasted time, ” and that’s exactly the vibe we aim for.
If you’re worried about feeling lost: speak up. We’d rather you ask in the moment than guess. Our instructors are known for strong technical cues and for paying attention to form.
What it feels like during class
Expect “challenging but not intimidating.” You’ll feel your core turn on quickly, and you might shake a little in slow, controlled movements. That’s normal. We’ll offer modifications so you can stay in good form instead of muscling through.
“It was challenging but not intimidating.”

After class ends
A lot of people hang around for a few minutes, stretch, and chat. That community feel is real here. We’ve had visitors tell us they made new friends in just a few classes, and members often bring friends because it feels comfortable fast.
Aftercare for week one: soreness, sleep, and what “progress” usually looks like
Mild muscle soreness is common in your first week, especially if you ramp up quickly. One member summed it up perfectly: sore the next day “in a great way.” Hydrate, take a walk, and do a little gentle mobility or foam rolling if you have it.
If you’re stacking classes, listen to how your body responds. You don’t need to max out every session to see results. People often notice posture changes, core control, and body composition shifts when they’re consistent.
“I can see my body composition changing.”

A quick sauna note
If you use our infrared sauna, keep it simple: drink extra water and give yourself a few minutes to cool down after. Some members tell us they sleep better after sauna sessions, so it can be a nice way to support recovery during a high-frequency month.
Lincoln Park tips we only tell new members: class mixing, “enter a little late, ” and staying consistent
The fastest way to make 20 classes feel doable is to mix formats. Many members rotate Pilates Flow with more intense Power Reformer-style sessions, so they keep momentum without feeling wrecked.
Here’s a small thing people love: we have locks for lockers and big bathrooms stocked with everyday extras like hair ties and hairspray. It sounds minor, but it makes fitting classes into a Chicago day easier.
And yes, we’re human about real life. One member even called out our “ability to enter a little late” as a studio win. Don’t make it a habit, but if the Brown line does what it does, we’ll still help you get set up quickly and safely.
